Mrs Coulter
Lyra’s life changes dramatically when she meets Mrs. Coulter, the beautiful and entrancing head of the Magisterium’s General Oblation Board, who visits the college on business, accompanied by her daemon, an unnamed silent golden monkey. A scholar and an explorer, Mrs. Coulter embodies everything Lyra hopes she’ll someday be. “I don’t think there are many people in the world who could convincingly play this character,” says Weitz. “Nicole Kidman was the first person that everyone on the creative side wanted for Mrs. Coulter.”
Executive producer Ileen Maisel had previously worked with Kidman and knew she would be intrigued by such a complex character. “Nicole immediately understood the nature of Mrs. Coulter,” Maisel notes. “She understood the power of the character; she understood the charisma of the character, and ultimately she understood the vulnerability of the character.”
Adds executive producer Andrew Miano, “Nicole was the only actress that we ever talked about for the role, and Chris’s script went to her first. She was the only choice. Luckily for us, she shared our enthusiasm for this project.”
The Academy Award®-winning actress embraced the intricacies of Marisa Coulter, who has kept the true nature of her relationship with Lyra hidden from the child. “I’ve obviously played characters before that have done despicable things,” Kidman relates. “Rarely do you judge the character you’re playing. You have to work from within and try to find the motivations as to why she feels that what she’s doing is right, and you hope that her humanity bleeds through.”
“The chemistry between Mrs. Coulter and Lyra is a very specific one,” says Chris Weitz. “Mrs. Coulter’s allure and glamour draw her in, but there are other dimensions which Lyra will not discover until later. Nicole brings such experience, compassion, intelligence and insight to this role, and her style just meshed perfectly with Dakota’s very natural, instinctual performance. Their relationship, while incredibly tricky, worked out seamlessly on camera.”

I love the Golden Monkey in the wallpaper - he looks just as I imagined him. Although, I have to say he looks very different from how he looks in the Comic-Con preview. Maybe that’ll change as all the finishing touches are added to the film.

In the books, i thought she was the most fascinating character, as she was evil, but she herself believes that what she is doing is good. She is loyal to the Church but she rejects them when… aah… find out in the Amber Spyglass

I always imagined Mrs. Coulter with an appearance such as Catherine Zeta Jones, with the dark, rich, raven hair and breath taking colored eyes. Although I am suprised to learn the creative staff never considered the character to be that type of beauty. However, don’t be mistaken, I am a HUGE Nicole Kidman fan and was pleasantly suprised by her portrayal of Mrs. Coulter and know it will be beautiful.

Nicole looks incredible as Ms Coulter! She gives off an icy delicious feel with a hint of caring for Lyra. I hope the movie shows both Ms Coulter’s good and evil sides equally. A balanced sympathethic portrayal is vital.

Wow, although Nicole Kidman is not exactly like the book describes, she gives off an aura of glinting, shimmering, glittering evil and glamour and coldness at the same time, yet you can see that she does care for Lyra. She has a good side, which is caring for Lyra, and a bad side, which is being able to trick people and working with people that do bad things. However, it must be interesting to be Mrs. Coulter, though I wouldn’t say it must be enjoyable.

She already is brilliance, but in this movie even MORE!!! Kidman is my favorite actress and Mrs. Coulter my favorite character!

I like Nicole too and think she´s one of the best actress we have, but I think she is not the best solution for this roll. She has not much in common (her look) with the Person in the book. If you look at her u notice that she is evil. I thought a person who looks more nice and u would trust her because of her beauty and sensitive being, but in the inside she has the character from mrs coulter… Anyway - I´m very happy that this movie comes to the cinema and I´m looking forward to see it.

I think that Nicole Kidman is the best suited for the character of Mrs. Coulter and I am sure has played the role exceptionally and to all expectations…But…You could have asked her to dye her hair dark or at least where a dark wig to tie in with the book better… Can’t wait to see the films even tho i can’t help but think im going to nit pick at every minor detail thats different to the books.

I think everyone writing here gets it; we’ve said nothing about Marisa Coulter that hasn’t been said in the introduction. She’s seductive, cruel, spiteful, and clever, yes; but on the other hand, it is hard to understand her change as it appeared in “Amber Spyglass”. She claims that being in proximity to Lyra – meeting Lyra, as it were – reminded her that she was a mother. I would not believe anything Marisa Coulter said (for she is a skilled liar), but her actions seem to support this idea, at least in the scene wherein she most closely imitates her daughter.

Most definitely imagined Mrs Coulter as being the raven haired brunette, so was quite shocked to see her blonde - will have to go back over the books ! Had imagined her to be more Madelene Stowe. Think Kidman is a briliant choice though, have no doubt she’ll get it right.

as all of us are, i am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this movie. but, just a comment for everybody who thinks coulter’s evil: everybody makes mistakes and does something not too likable in their life; shes got her good side and her bad side like the rest of the people in this world, so don’t judge coulter based on only what YOU have seen of her.

I think that Nicole Kidman is great for this role she can just be so realistic in these roles that she plays. I mean I got freaked out when I figured out that Nicole Kidman’s charater had the exact same name and spelling as my name I mean gosh I literaly freaked out because Nicole Kidman is my abosoulute favorite acterss in the world and I blew me off my feet. I don’t like that she still has blonde hair. In the book, Mrs. Coulter was described with long, dark hair. This could be Kidman’s fault, because I know they wanted her for cast, but she might have refused to colour it. Still, this might just be a nitpicky detail, but I don’t see a blonde accurately portraying the devious, alluring figure that Mrs. Coulter as a character embodies.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE! I love the whole trilogy. My favorite character happens to be Mrs. Couter. Her misdemeanor attitude yet angelic way of portraying as a villan was the most profound attraction to me. Although, I do have my second favorite character which only appears in the subtle knife, if you get what I mean. For those that haven’t yet read the following books, it’s a great a buy. I read the book back when I was in 7th grade and completely loved it. More then the Harry Potter series! Now I am 19 years old and once I saw the movie trailor, I was completely mezmerize. I had to reread the series again before I see it next week. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to see the sneak preview due to unexpected turn of events and believe me, I’m pretty pissed off about it. But oh well… what can I do. Anyways, GO MRS. COULTER… -.-
