Lyra
To find the right young person to embody the critical role of Lyra, casting directors Fiona Weir and Lucy Bevan cast a wide net across the UK, ultimately seeing over 10,000 young actresses. “We had casting sessions in multiple cities,” recalls Weir. “Literally thousands of young girls came out, really brave, wonderful personalities, and it was then honed down to a core group for the director. And when we found our Lyra, she just seemed born for the part.”
Overwhelmingly, one young actress stood out – Dakota Blue Richards. “Dakota had a particular spirit that made you sit up and take notice,” recalls Weitz. “I was looking at the tapes and there was this waif of a girl, yet there was something very strong and interesting about her.”
“She is an extraordinary young woman,” says producer Deborah Forte. “She’s just 12 years old, and has never acted professionally before, but when she gets in front of the camera, she possesses an intelligence and feral quality, a little bit of wildness, that is perfect for Lyra.”
Dakota Blue Richards, who had read the books and seen the stage adaptation of The Golden Compass, jumped at the opportunity to play a character for whom she had a passionate affinity. Richards particularly admired Lyra’s bravery and determination. “Because Lyra never had parents, she thinks no one can tell her what to do, so she never really does what she’s told,” explains Richards. “She does things other people would be scared of, like climbing the roofs of Jordan College, where she lives, and getting in trouble.”
Lyra is accompanied every step of her life by her daemon (pronounced DEE-mon), Pantalaimon (voiced by Freddie Highmore). A daemon, explains Weitz, is “a physical manifestation of your soul, which takes the form of an animal. In the case of children, because of their unlimited potential, a daemon can change shape.”
Throughout her journey, Lyra is constantly given strength, comfort and occasionally wary admonishments by Pan. “I think it’s a very enticing concept, this notion that you have a running dialogue with your inner self for your entire life,” muses Weitz.

The books are amazing! I’ve just read ‘The Subtle Knife’, and I can’t wait to read ‘The Amber Spyglass’ again! (Yes, I’ve read them all before, but since I heard about the film, I just had to buy the three books, and read them again!!) Now I’m just waiting, like every one else, and see every video and every photos of the video as I can. I think the actors look like what I imagened, exept for the few exeptions (like Mrs. Coulter’s hair, and Lyra’s eyes) but that don’t really matters. I’m looking forward to it! (And the other films…)

I’ve been keep talking about the book for last couple of weeks (reading ‘the subtle knife’ and trying not to finish and exit from this imaginary but real than ever worlds). Lyra has already become a part of my daily life she is with me when I’m on the bus, in a park, at home or at work. Took me a while to decide whether I want to see the faces by checking the movie website since I shaped them in my mind as I wished. Here they are!! Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel and Lyra… No disappointment at all.. It feels like looking at an album which contains familiar faces and memories. Lyra is as beautiful and fragile looking as I imagined.

Lyra did well in her role, even if I can’t entirely see the Major Effects she had on the worlds. With Adonai dead, the Magisterium would probably be reduced; however, is that all? If so, then Lyra has truly done what she must do in ignorance.

I don’t think it should be only one movie, Kamagopolis!!! I mean, in the end someone dies, and it leaves you hanging!!!! How can someone not want more movies to come out?! These will be one of the best movies ever. All of the actors are perfect, I can’t wait to see Pan alive in the movie! I really hope they don’t kill the movies and make the books look bad, like they did in Eragon. If it’s half as good as the book, then ish awesome.

It did say she had ‘distinctly blonde hair’ so I was guessing more of lighter blonde. But, in this picture, she doesn’t look all that different then what I would think the gyptian children looked like.
I highly doubt that this movie will be near as good as the book, they never are. But, as said at the top, they ruined Eragon, and this movie looks half decent. I wouldn’t say Academy Award winning obviously, but something I could sit through.

The trilogy was fantastic. Being a teen I find it hard to get books that suit me. I didn’t actually read the books until this year. When I was younger I decided they were boring but that statement is no longer repeated. I loved the trailer when I went to see Stardust and was very excited that it was coming out. I’ve hinted to my parents thats what I want to see. Hopefully they received the hint without any hitches.

I too am currently re-reading the trilogy and forgot how fantastic the books are. I agree with the majority on here that Lyra should be “distinctly blonde” but maybe the true blondes weren’t talented enough and who in their right mind would make a twelve year old dye their hair? My major concern is that Dakota Blue seems too prim and proper. To my mind the books portray Lyra as tough, rough, abrupt and, as shown by Pan’s defensive form of a wildcat, wild and agressive. Dakota seems to speak beautiful Queen’s English whereas in the books Lyra tends to say thing like ” I ‘ent” which comes across as more Mockney accented. Discuss!!

I imagined Lyra looking more like the girl on the cover of The Subtle Knife (the one that has the picture of her and will with their daemons). More blonde with shorter hair. Richards just seems almost a little…i don’t know, girly. But I’ll have to see how her performance is though and if she will do Lyra justice. I just hope the CGI doesn’t look fake.

I havn’t read all of the book yet but even so it seems really intresting. I can’t wait for the movie to come out. My mother says its a bit odd that im like lyra but she says even if i am that movie en’t something for me cause that part is for dakota only. Dakota really shows how shw had traits of lyra but she also shows that she’s really happy to be in this movie and dakota really shows how lyra would act and be. What i don’t understand is why some things like looks are diffrent but it dosn’t matter.can’t wait to see the movie.

Eishi: I was also confused by the title change. I won a Harry Potter trivia in 2006 and got a bunch of books, Northern Lights being one of them. I went to see the 5th Harry Potter movie and saw a trailer for the “Golden Compass” and realized that it was the same story. (The armoured bears gave it away). After alot of looking I found out about the title change. I guess they thought the “Golden Compass” sounded more exciting. Thet did the same thing with Harry Potter and the Philosipher’s Stone.

You remember that scene in the Subtle Knife when the kids were convinced that Lyra and Will were responsible for Tullio’s death, so they made an attack at the Torre Degli Angeli and they were carrying guns. The only thing I thing I could think while I was reading that was “Oh my god!”. By the way, I think I know what Torre Degli Angeli means. Torre sounds like tower, (which it is) degli seems like of, and obviously angeli means angels. Together we get “Tower of Angels” which suits the building exactly.
(Could somebody answer my comments when they wake up? I’m getting lonely out here).

From what I have seen, Dakota seem perfect for the role as Lyra. I am so looking forward for this movie, and now it´s only five days left until i get to see it!
One bad thing though: I wish the hadn´t put a childrens voice to Pan, I always imagined it a more manly one. But, on the other hand, it´s probably natural: a childs voice to a childs daemon, a grownups voice to a grownups daemon.

I live in a small town in Georgia’s “Bible Belt”. The local theater is not going to show this movie supposedly because the books have derogatory religious messages. They had been advertising it since the summer and even showed previews of it. They have obviously succumbed to local pressure! So instead of showing this they are showing the same movies for three weeks!!! Since this will not generate much revenue they have raised ticket prices for the second time this year!!! Now I will have to travel 40 miles to see it and they can stuff their price increase up their religious poop shoots.

i am really disappointed how the movie turned out. It is like in a rush. I would say 2hr and 30 mins would justify the movie but no… they cut it in an hour and 45 (not sure of the time but its less than two hour) and changed iofur’s name and ugh… i am really depressed. i am not gonna tell you the ending of the movie coz you guys would hate me but anyone who read the book would say the director didnt even read or understand the concept of the story itself. I wonder why pullman would agree for him to change some of the story like that! just see the movie for yourself and tell me i’m wrong… >.>

I was a little dissapointed by the movie. They did a great deal of the events out of order and they changed many other things. Worst of all they cut out the last three chapters of the book. I feel like they almost did what they did to Eragon. But the parts that they didn’t change were great though. Overall, they could have done MUCH better, but it was a great movie however. Go see it, but maybe it’s not worth rushing to see it in theaters. So get it when they make a DVD.

All I can say is WOW.
It was amazing. The visual effects are brilliant. Pan and all the Dæmons were absolutely stunning!
I am “new” to the whole “His Dark Materials” books but I love them. I a 100% pure Harry Potter fan but I must say that I LOVED these books so much. I personally think these movies [for they WILL make the other two! *shakes fist threateningly] will be a HUGE success through fans and new fans to come such as myself. I don’t however think they will be quite as successful as Harry Potter. I doubt anything will be quite as big as Potter in at least the next 10 - 15 years.
Dakota was fabulous! She is a true Lyra and did her brilliant justice! Kudos Miss Richards!PS:

I love the movie. This epic movie was very exciting. It had a good plot. I also think the acting is good. Lyra (a.k.a Dakota), is a great actress. I can see why they choose Dakota over the other 9,999 others that try outs. I have not read the books yet, but I intend to soon.

His Dark Materials trulogy is the best books ever! I’ve read the book, and then loved it so much! Unfortunately, I’m not watch the movie yet..

I love the Golden Compass! it is def my fave movie!! I’ve almost finished reading the 2nd book and i cant wait 2 read the 3rd! I think that Dakota was the perfect person 2 b chosen 4 lyra because that is how i always pictured her! They did a great job of the movie and i cant wait 2 c the other 2!!!

The books were utterly fantastic. I really enjoyed reading them. The movie was amazing although but they missed out loads in the end. Like, how Rodger died and Asriel used that machine to cross the nothern lights. That was all missed out in the movie but I did see it in the trailer. It’s really annoying how they left it out when it looked really good. Oh well, maybe they’ll put it in the deleted scenes when it comes out on DVD.

This was a fantastic movie, i cant wait for the next one! The books were fantastic, especially “the amber spyglass”. They really did a good job with the movie. I hope in the next ones though, the daemons get to play a bigger role. I like pantalaimon, hes cool. =D
