CHARACTERS
Of witches, aeronauts and armoured bears
Though unaware of the role she is to play in the fate of her world, Lyra enlists the alliance of three people who will help her reach her task and save the children from the terrible fate the Magisterium has in store for them. One is Serafina Pekkala (Eva Green), Clan-queen of the witches of Lake Enara, who helps Lyra see the important role she must play in the coming war. She’s not a traditional witch, explains Green, who recently starred in Casino Royale and Kingdom of Heaven. She’s very maternal, very nurturing towards Lyra. It is quite a mysterious role, which I found very attractive.
She also enlists the help of an aeronaut from Texas, Lee Scoresby, played by Sam Elliott. Sam has this extraordinary ability to sum up everything we mean by the idea of cowboy, notes Philip Pullman. The grizzled veteran. The white moustache. The eyes that look a thousand yards. All these things. And his has this capacity to be both tough and wise, both threatening, dangerous and warm.
Her final alliance is with an estranged armored ice bear named Iorek Byrnison. When she first sees him, she is kind of scared because he’s really big, strong and wounded, describes Richards. But she knows he’s her only chance of having an armored bear as a friend. Eventually, Lyra finds in Iorek a kindred soul on whom she can unflinchingly rely. Iorek is the only person that Lyra lets be better than she is, says Richards. He’s the only person that she truly accepts to be bigger and stronger and braver than she is. She looks up to other people and understands that they’re important, but he’s the one exception to her idea that she’s the best.
Rounding out the cast are Ian McShane voicing the bear king Ragnar Sturlusson; Tom Courtenay as the wise Gyptian Farder Coram; Simon McBurney as the sinister Fra Pavel; Derek Jacobi as the Magisterial Emmissary; and Clare Higgins as Gyptian matriarch Ma Costa.

Anyone seen the film The big Lebowski?
In this hilarious movie with Jeff Bridges, there is a scene with a mysterious old cowboy (Sam Elliot), sitting in a bar and saying these mysterious words: Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes you got eaten by the bear.I’m a die hard fan of the LOTR trilogy, but after seeing TGC trailer with Sam Elliot and a huge armoured ice bear, I think this movie also rocks !
Got to find those books first. -
Ash
The books are works of art! I just pray the films do them justis. There are so many things they could get wrong, but i must admit i am really looking forward to this film. Not since The Lord of the Rings films have i been so excited about a movie. And Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter is just perfect casting. She has a cold beauty that is ideal for the role. Role on December 7th!!!

I was upset that they changed Iorek’s name .. And that Mrs. Coulter has blonde instead of very drak brown hair, however, everything else is quite matching to what I had seen in my head while reading the books. I can’t WAIT for this movie, and I really hope it does to the novels justice, and not leave anything out!
-
Steve

I have read the book about 8 years ago and can’t wait to see it on screen. Phillip Pulman is an amazing writter; I hope the movie will honor his talent. December seems so far. Well we shall see.
-
Hope J. Holm
Oh my God!!! *bounces around crazily* YAY YAY YAY!!! The movie is coming out!!!! If anyone is in Girl Scouts, I wrote a big article about it and the magazine is gonna be published on December first, so please read it! I think Nicole Kidman is a good choice for Mrs. Coulter, even if she is different in the book. The movie looks great, December 7th is way too long to wait for The Golden Compass to come out…
-
Mahesh
Oh Eva! December is a long wait.
-
Andrew
Film looks great, i will deffinatly be there on the opening night, have to say a little dissapointed with the name. i think that i should’ve been called Northen Lights like the books

Eva Green and Sam Elliott portraying the roles of two integral characters in The Golden Compass, how impressive! Both thespians should bring interest and magic to their respective roles. And how about Iorek Byrnison! I look forward to this film.

-
katie k
Iorek rocks!!! he is by far the cooolest character in the book!!! I hope he is just as cool in the movie!!! =) all the previews look really good, i have just seen them online though, there arent that many in theaters. Serafina is pretty neat too. She is so cool with her witchy ways. the whole idea of the witch clan thing is really creative. Lee Scoresby was kinda neat too. i didnt picture him the way they showed him in the movie. they made him too old. I hope that there is a subtle knife and amber spyglass move too! I also hope that the book does the move justice!! I cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
JustinBear
I love bears! I love polar bears! im gonna wait for this movie!!! I think it’s a wonderful movie!!

Looking forward to this trilogy, hope its as good as LOTR, Little disappointed to see that Daniel Craig (Flavour of the month) has taken over from Timothy Dalton who was perfectly cast as Lord Asriel. And changeing characters names to avoid confusion is a bit insulting to the audiences inteligents, But anyway It looks very good and I do hope the Director hasnt spoiled what are very interesting books, In a way that Narnia Fell flat on its face ( If only Peter Jackson had directed it. Lastly I know these are childrens books and films but quality should never be compramised unlike my spelling. Fingers crossed for this one. PS does anyone know if Jill Pavers Wolf Brother Books are being adapted to film?
-
Taylor
The 3 characters in the movie that look just how I imagined them
-
Chloe
Yes I know Shar. It was actually Iofur Raknison that was the bear king.

I am so excited about this movie!!! I just read the books two or three weeks ago when a friend told me that there was going to be a movie AND a game. I haven’t been this excited about movie since I bought the StarWars trilogy on DVD, and that’s really saying something!

-
Rose Arroyo
The story of this film is very is fantastic as written in book i wish to see a clear picture of this bear insn’t bear makes story exciting
-
Softbagel
I think this movie is going to do well in the eyes of book readers, but the plot is too confusing for children, so I hope that’s not the audience this movie is aimed for, like Eragon was (that movie was a nightmare to watch after reading the book!). I like the casting. One thing I don’t like is the Texas stereotype for Lee Scoresby. I guess its only annoying because i’m from Texas and we ain’t all cowboys down here like all y’all think. =)
….But really guys, it does get annoying. -
Gina
Does anyone know if they plan to make all 3 books into movies?
-
katie k
is it december 7th yet? Iorek rules!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Casey Lyn
The bear kings name is Iofur Raknison i just want to point out….
-
Megan
I’m reading the amber spyglass right now and i absolutly LOVE the books!!! they ROCK!!! but i think that they made Lee Scoresby too old. i always thought of him as a thirty-something brunette. and what’s the deal with changing Iofur’ name?!?!?! that’s giong to get me annoyed throughout the whole movie!!!
-
Lyndsay
im really looking forward to this film, and i have been since my best friend’s sister auditioned for lyra, which was dead exciting for a die hard fan like me (i have the trilogy signed ^_^)
i have to admit, the title is a bummer for me, coz im british, and here its called “northen lights” not the golden compass. and changing the bears name for the sake of not confusing kids is a bit silly. oh and *cough* where is serafina’s cloud pine branch in the picture??? theyre not supposed to be able to fly without them!
other than that, so far it looks fantastic and i cant wait for december! nicole kidman really is perfect..
i hope they dont go off from the books too much! -
Marta
they are going to wait and see how this movie pans out and then they will decide on whether to make the other 2 movies. and if you are all thinking that it is going to go by the book it is NOT. it would have been to hard to recreate like the book was written. also, the plot will be all about Lyra and her quest to gain family. do not go expecting to see the book on the screen, go with the mind that you are seeing a story that you have never heard of before because other wise you will come out disappointed. the movie does look wonderful and the books (all of them) are awsome, but they will not be the same.
-
andie
the visuals on iorek look stunning, he was one of my fav chars in the first book…. only second to lyra ^ ^
-
Harry
i read the books 7 or 8 years ago, but recently moved house and found them all again. reading through them a second time being quite a bit older, i interpreted the storyline in a much darker light. theres so much behind it that you might not understand as a child. its very much a dark material indeed.
for the film, the CGI on the Daemons looks a bit hit-or-miss, and Timothy Dalton would have been a much better actor for the role of Lord Asriel. i didn’t even know it was the same thing until i watched the trailer; whats all this “golden compass” nonsense? Should have had a British production and been a lot more sinister in my opinion. at least more people will read the books because of it, which is what Philip Pullman deserves. they should definitely make all 3 parts of the trilogy. what a concept. just hope New Line don’t butcher it. -
Lt Weezie
As with LOTR and Narnia, we can only hope the films are as magnificent as the books. Of course, they will never be able to properly depict every vital aspect, but from the previews and the photos so far, it appears they have managed the incredible task. Kudos to everyone involved including the conceptual artists. I can only imagine what it would be like to be a part of the entire process! Let’s hope they film and retain much more than will be shown at the theatres as the final cut, and eventually include all the extras in the DVD. Peter Jackson created a masterpeice with all three LOTR films. May all involved with the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy have the foresight to do the same!
-
Shelley
I saw a trailer for this film when i took my daughter to see another one and i can not wait until it comes in the cinema. I am definately going to try and see it and am more excited than my daughter!
-
Kelsey
But where’s Roger???? Does anyone know yet if they are making the sequels? I realize it won’t be the same, but I hope they keep expanding on the Gobbler storyline instead of watching Lyra come upon the plot. I could see them doing that for time’s sake but it’s the essential part of the story! As is Roger seeing as she would not be in Will’s world for book 2 without him being dragged through the window by Lord Asriel. Yet I haven’t seen hide nor tail of him in any of the trailers.
-
Ivana

Does this movie have some resemblence to ‘East of Sun, West of the Moon’, an old Norwegian folk tale. I read this book recently and commented to my husband that it would be a wonderful movie and when I saw the preview for The Golden Compass I was ecstatic! I cannot wait to see it. Any other comments about ‘East of the Sun, West of the Moon? I know there are plenty of comment about this movie!

-
christina
Phillip Pullman’s trilogy are the best books i have ever read, i hope the film is as good as the trailers make it look. I hope they will do 3 films otherwise it’ll ruin the books and confuse and probably annoy fans of the book (or will it just annoy me?). Plus i’d love to see how they make the mulefa look from the 3rd book!!!! That should be a challenge and a half! must must must see this film!!!
-
Saphira
This movie looks FANTASTIC!!!!!! Just as I imagined it! Yes, the Bear King is Iofur Rasknison. ^.^

CANNOT believe that the movie is coming out! The books were just too much to hope for, and now this! Phillip Pullman has truly pulled a magnifecent trilogy, and I CANNOT wait for the second movie though I haven’t even seen the 1st one! I HEART U PHILLIP PULLMAN! What a heart-warming tale…
-
Leonidao
Yea I bet the movies going to be awsome and I’m really excited! But where is Serrifina Pekkala’s
daemon ,Kaisa. Even though he’s not in the whole movie he does bring her important information. -
Lutheus (my daemon's name)
I can’t wait to watch the movie! I’ve read the books many times and I think the best book is The Amber Spyglass. That book would be the best movie ever made! My favorite charecters is Lyra, Will, Iorek, Serafina and Lee (he’s a bit older than I imagined, but after seeing trailers and other stuff, I think he’s perfect for playing Lee. And the Texas stereotype is perfect for Lee) But there’s a few things missing and changed, or maybe it’s just me. In the book, Mrs Coulter has black hair, but in the movie she has blond. And where is Serafina’s cloud-pine branch?! They’re not supposed to be able to fly without them and I haven’t seen it on the trailers or on the pictures. And is it just me, or is there anyone else that doesn’t like Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel. My brother thinks he’s perfect, but I don’t like him at all. Lord Asriel would be much better with “fierce dark face”, something I don’t think Lord Asriel has when he’s played by Daniel, Lord Asriel would be much better with dark hair than blond. Anyway, I hope this movie is still going to be great! (even if everything isn’t completely right)

-
WTF
The only thing that bothers me is that they haven’t even tried to learn how to correctly say Serafina Pekkala. And of course even more disturbing is that Kaisa is actually a girls name. It made it quite confusing at the beginning. But still, the movie was good.
-
Sue
GOSH!!! I’VE SEEN THE MOVIE & I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! THIS MOVIE ROCKS!!! IOREK BYRNISON IS SO COOL!!!

Ian Mckellan is a GREAT actor I saw him in the LORD OF THE RINGS AS THE WIZARD GANDOFE THE GRAY and I liked him ever since because his a GREAT English/ British actor/acsent! My sisterinlaw Jana told me I should read the books! I think I will! How many of the books are there? Three I think? Any way I liked the movie and I hope other people do as well! READ THE BOOKS!

I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have posted several pix of Iorek on my Goodtree.com page…oh, and Shar, Ragnur is not Iorek’s father, that was Iofur’s father I think, we never hear about Iorek’s father…Ragnur was either Iofur’s father that he killed, or the bear that Iorek killed.
