Dakota Blue Richards
DAKOTA BLUE RICHARDS (Lyra Belacqua) was born in London in 1994. When her mother named her Dakota Blue, she couldn’t have imagined the impact that name would have just over a decade later when she was cast in the leading role of Lyra in The Golden Compass.
Richards was a fan of Philip Pullman’s books and her mother read His Dark Materials to her when she was nine. She also saw the National Theatre production in London and told her mother that she wanted to be Lyra, the fiercely loyal and high-spirited heroine of The Golden Compass.
She lives with her mother in Sussex, on the south coast of England. The Golden Compass marks her feature film acting debut.

My Goodness me I think this is the first book to film adaptation I have seen where I am 100% sure the leading roles are perfect. I always wanted to be Lyra but alas I am a tad old, so I am so glad to see that someone who shared my dream achieved it.

PS. to Agustin: in His Dark Materials Lyra is aged at around 12-13 throughout the trilogy, so actually Dakota is the appropriate age, especially as if they film the next two books she will age considerably as films always take far longer to shoot than the length of the films themselves!

I don’t think they could have picked a more perfect girl to play the role of Lyra. She’s just how I imangined her in the books. It’s also nice to know that Dakota was a fan of the books before she was cast.

I can’t realy tell just from looking at her picture if she will be a good Lyra, but I’ve seen the trailer and she looks like she has done a pretty good job of being Lyra. I’m also a little disapointed that her hair isn’t that reddish color. It isn’t a bad thing that she has blond hair, or at least it loos like it, but it did kind of mess up the way I thought of her in my mind when I read the books. I say good luck!

Hey Dakota, I’ve being reading some of the comments, and im amazed at the support you have! Since the flim is probley in post-Production and you’ve finished filming, i have loads of questions like how does it feel talking to thin air (which will later be a Amoured bear or what his name thingy)
I wonder if you felt out classed, with such famous actors all around you, when i was reading the books, i didnt really imagine what Lyra looked like, so when i saw the photos i was like “Ohhh THATS what she’s like”
When you film the Subtle Knife, im sure you’ll have great time stepping through Imaginary windows to imagniary “other” worlds..haha
On a last note, as i said before, i have a tonne of questions which i cant put here, i would love it if you could email me your Msn/Email, your choice..meh
I hope the film is around 2 and a half hours, since otherwise they will skip vital stuff out, well not vital, but i dont want it to speed ahead way to fast.

Hey, I’m Grace and im in Australia… and i love the books, and i think u look so Lyra-like, and yeah. I’m really excited to see the film. One question, is the book called the Golden Compass in England? because over here it is called the Northern Lights, and I think it would be weird if they changed the name, because it is an alethiometer, not a compass.
They movie hasn’t come out yet in Australia, it comes out boxing day, and I can’t wait to see it.
P.S, I hope you actually get to read this comment thing, otherwise i will feel like such an idiot. especially if it is one of those things that SAYS that it will send it on to the person, but it is just a scam. Then i will be dreadfully dissapointed.

The amount of support you have received is phenomenal! I think it’s hilarious the amount of people asking to be a new friend or “e-mail buddy”. I guess I could ask the same thing :).
We all must sound so fake but you seem like a beautiful girl and so amazingly talented. Your acting is so good! Their definitely wouldn’t be many who have done such a brilliant job as a “beginner” with so much green screen and “green sock puppets” haha.
Also… You are MY LYRA! The exact image I had in my head! Well… maybe a little different … but not by much haha!

wow, what a wonderful magical world in which you have a privilege to live in. great acting, i’m going to buy pullman’s book right now, saw the movie yesterday and i think it will not be the last time for a long time now. so impressive acting, i can’t believe it, so mucbetter than any other girl in those fantasy movies, cause you keep your real character and just act lifelike, not filmlike. it seems like i never want to leave your world and yes it makes real life really boring, especially without demons
