‘Golden Compass’ Fans Flip For Extended Trailer: ‘Incredible Is An Understatement’

‘I was engrossed from the very first second,’ 15-year-old Eliza Harkins says after catching sneak peek of fantasy flick in NYC.

NEW YORK — As ice-skaters took to the rink at Rockefeller Center for the first time this season, they were given a special treat — a sneak peek at the expanded trailer for “The Golden Compass” on the big screen.

Though it was a private party, crowds gathered by the railings to check out the first installment of the “His Dark Materials” trilogy. Once the clip premiered at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, it ran on a loop, filling the rink with images of ferocious polar bears, snowy landscapes and flying witches.  Continue Reading.

Years ago I read “His Dark Materials” after my sister raved about them. I loved them so much I was so sad to finish the series ( I’ve read them over and over at this stage). I’m so excited to see the first movie! It looks fantastic!! (a 36 yr old mommy of two teens)

Yes, I agree with the poster above! Please please include the final three chapters! On all the fansites I’ve been on there has been a general uproar….cutting the chapters out doesn’t make sense, and ruins the emotional impact of the ending in the books. I have complete faith in New Line and that they will make a movie definitely worth watching, but I don’t feel that I can watch it if I know that three of the most emotional, dramatic and satisfying chapters of the series have been cut off. Please include them :(

I think if New Line feels it makes a better film with the ending being removed then it’s a bad decision, but if Chris Weitz is the guy who has made the film then fair enough; I trust the guy’s integrity, and I appreciate he and Pullman sending a message to the fans to explain their reasons for doing so. I’m still more upset by Nonso Anozie getting the sack, but nothing can be done about that now; I just hope we get to hear his voice on a director’s cut of the film in the future.

I’m still massively excited for the film (albeit maybe slightly less so - but only very slightly). The trailer looks cool and as long as it sticks to the dark tone of the book and doesn’t “kiddy-fy” it, then all’s good!!

I don’t particularly mind if they cut off the last few chapters–I would prefer New Line keep it on, but…count me out of the uproar.

I love Marisa’s line: “Come along”, and Lyra…”I’ll never be yours!”. The amazing fan reaction was not surprising…it is, after all…a stunning trailer.

I really do hope that they refer to Lyra’s instrument in the film as the Alethiometer and not the Golden Compass. I noticed that the more recent trailers have been changed from the earlier ones, and are now refering to it as the latter. I’m hoping that this change is just for the trailer and not the film itself. Please stay faithful to the books on this matter. I can’t wait to see the films, but hope New Line don’t mess with the fundamental elements too much. Its an Alethiometer.
