Daniel Craig - beyond Bond

Australia’s Herald Sun profiles actor Daniel Craig:

DANIEL Craig freely admits Nicole Kidman turns him on. The blond, blue-eyed, hunky British actor, who scored a major success as the new James Bond, says he and Kidman had great chemistry when they worked on the sci-fi thriller The Invasion, a loose remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and during the screen adaptation of Philip Pullman’s best-seller His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass.

In an interview with W magazine, Craig says: “Nicole turns me on. Not in a sordid, horrible way — well, come to think of it!”

The article goes on to mention…

During The Invasion hiatus, Kidman and Craig were in London working on His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, a fantasy in which they play star-crossed lovers. She is the wickedly manipulative Mrs Coulter, while he plays the adventurer/scholar Lord Asriel.

In the film’s climax, they play out their one romantic scene on the North Pole, while straddling two universes.

Director Chris Weitz calls this “a great sentimental moment — a throwback to the moment Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara say goodbye” in Gone With The Wind.

Ummmm….. sorry, but unless I’m remembering the book wrongly Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter never meet at the North Pole, never mind straddling two worlds.

They are NOT star crossed lovers but bitter enemies and their reconciliation only comes at the end of The Amber Spyglass when they conspire to defeat The Metatron….

Let’s hope that the Herald Sun is only speculating at the ending and Chris Weitz hasn’t messed things up by totally skewing the ending of Northern Lights. This can only cause problems in the following two films as the ‘relationship’ between the two of the them develop.

    Dear Stuart,

If you check your chapter and verse you will find that Asriel and Mrs. Coulter do in fact have a romantic moment on the polar ice, before Asriel walks off into the sky.

    Yours hopefully-nut-messing-up-ingly,

Sorry Stuart, you are remembering the book wrongly! Page 392 of my edition (tie-in to the film) describes Lyra watching them, amazed. ‘Mrs Coulter herself stood there, clasped in Lord Asriel’s arms’ ‘passionate kiss’…..
As I remember, this does surprise the reader too, because we have seen them as enemies, as you say. This just reminds me that I must read it again before I see the film, which I am really looking forward to!
