5 facts about ‘The Golden Compass’

Matt Forsman of AskMen.com lists the five things you likely didn’t know about The Golden Compass:

1- Dakota Blue Richards was selected from 10,000 girls
The Golden Compass is loaded with A-listers, including Daniel Craig, his love interest in Casino Royale, Eva Green, Nicole Kidman. Clearly, no expense was spared in assembling this stellar cast.

So why was the interesting decision made to cast the young neophyte Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra, the film’s protagonist? Her name alone screams Hollywood, but Dakota had to have been selected from a pool of 10,000 girls at an open casting call for a better reason than her name.

The decision to cast a complete unknown in the lead role for the first film in an anticipated trilogy is a bold move to say the least. It’s no secret that a reasonable amount of cash has been thrown at The Golden Compass, which raises the stakes even higher for the studio.

Nonetheless, Chris Weitz is a seasoned writer and director, and we can only assume that there was something remarkably compelling about Dakota that gave him the confidence to give her the role.

That’s amazing. From the trailer she seems like a really good actress! I’m always glad to see bright new talent hit the big screen (and also see great old talent like Nichole Kidmann)….not to say that she is old or anything…

Wow! She is really lucky! Wish I would have known about the auditions! Well, I hope she’s as good as others have been saying.

She does seem pretty great judging by the trailer! Can’t wait to see her and everyone else in real action on the big screen. It’s also very positive and smart, in my opinion, to cast someone unknown for the role, it might disturb the charachter to have someone in the role that we already know from some other role. I wish her the best of luck with everything to come!

She does seem a good actress on the trailers. Lyra is hard to capture, because she is wild but compassionate, strong but weak at the same time, girly and tomboyish. She’s such an odd mix of complete opposites and she’s all of them together, and that’s what makes it such a hard character to do. And I’m glad Nicole Kidman is doing Mrs. Coulter. She brings out the right aura of enticing glamour and danger at the same time.
